Otago Peninsula

The coastal environment of the Otago Peninsula is renowned for its marine wildlife, including the world’s only mainland albatross breeding colony and various other bird, seal and penguin species, including the beautiful Yellow-eyed Penguin, one of the world’s rarest.

Albatross Colony
Go and see the Albatross Colony at the Royal Albatross Centre at Taiaroa Head. The area has a diversity of wildlife which abounds on this small headland, and includes the only mainland colony of albatross in the world. The first albatross chick flew from Taiaroa Head in 1938 and from that date the colony has grown, with the area now protected as a nature reserve.
